The formula is simple: Payload = GVM − Kerb Weight

What confuses most owners is that passengers, fuel, accessories, and tow ball weight all eat into that number before you’ve loaded a single tool. A ute rated for “one tonne” can easily be down to 400-600 kg of usable payload once it’s fitted out for work.

What Is Kerb Weight?

Kerb weight is what your ute weighs sitting empty, with a full tank of fuel and all standard fluids, but no driver, passengers, or cargo on board. You’ll sometimes see it called “tare weight” or “tare mass,” and manufacturers use these terms slightly differently, so it’s worth checking your specific vehicle’s compliance plate rather than assuming.

What Is Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM)?

GVM is the maximum total weight your ute is allowed to reach once everything is loaded on it, including people, fuel, accessories, and cargo. It’s set by the manufacturer and stamped on the compliance plate, usually located on the driver’s door jamb or firewall. 

GVM is a hard legal limit. Go over it, and you’re driving an unregistered-in-effect, non-compliant vehicle in the eyes of WA authorities.

What Is Gross Combination Mass (GCM)?

GCM is the maximum combined weight of your ute and whatever it’s towing, added together. This number matters the moment you hook up a trailer, caravan, or boat. Many drivers check their GVM and towing capacity separately and assume they’re fine, without realising that loading the ute heavily and towing near its maximum at the same time can push the combination over GCM even when each number looks okay on its own.

How to Calculate Ute Payload Capacity

Determining your real-world ute carrying capacity requires factoring in everything loaded into the vehicle, not just your cargo. Once you know kerb weight and GVM, the payload formula is straightforward:

Payload = GVM − Kerb Weight

If your ute has a GVM of 3200 kg and a kerb weight of 2200 kg, your payload capacity is 1000 kg. That number is your ceiling for everyone and everything you add to the vehicle from that point on, and it shrinks fast once you start fitting the ute for actual work.

What Counts Towards Your Ute Payload Capacity?

Almost everything you put in or on the vehicle counts, and this is where most owners underestimate their real-world load.

Driver, Passengers and Pets

Every person in the cabin counts towards payload, including you. Use realistic adult weights when you’re doing the sums, not the outdated 68 kg “average” figures some manuals still reference. A dog in the tray or cabin counts too, and so does anything in a pet crate.

Fuel, Water and Other Fluids

A full tank of diesel in a dual-cab ute can weigh 65-90 kg depending on tank size. If your kerb weight figure already assumes a full tank, you don’t need to double count it, but if you’re topping up mid-trip or carrying jerry cans, water tanks, or extra fluids, all of that adds directly to your payload usage.

Bull Bars, Winches, Roof Racks and Accessories

This is where the “one-tonne ute” myth falls apart fastest. A steel bullbar can weigh 30-40 kg, a winch another 30 kg, and roof racks with a rooftop tent can easily add 60-100 kg. None of this is optional cargo you can leave at home when you’re loading up. It’s permanently fitted weight that eats into your payload every single time you drive. Keep in mind that when adding gear, choosing the right roof rack and heavy-duty accessories can quickly consume your remaining payload.

Toolboxes, Canopies and Cargo

Toolboxes, canopies, and the tray itself are often the single biggest chunk of payload used before you’ve loaded any actual work gear. A steel canopy can weigh well over 100 kg on its own, and a heavy-duty steel tray sits between 250-400 kg fitted. 

Installing heavy full ute canopies adds permanent weight directly over your rear axle. This is the category where your material choice makes the biggest practical difference to how much you can legally carry, which we’ll get into shortly.

Ute Payload Capacity vs Towing Capacity: What’s the Difference?

Payload capacity is what your ute can carry on board. Towing capacity is what it can pull behind it. They’re governed by different numbers on your compliance plate, and confusing the two is one of the most common (and costly) mistakes ute owners make.

What Is Tow Ball Mass (TBM)?

Tow ball mass is the portion of a trailer’s weight that presses down on your tow ball, rather than being carried by the trailer’s own wheels. It’s typically 8-12% of the trailer’s total loaded weight. Here’s the part that catches people out: tow ball mass isn’t a separate allowance. It comes directly out of your payload.

How Towing Reduces Your Available Payload

If your trailer has a 250 kg tow ball download, that 250 kg is subtracted from your ute’s available payload the same way a passenger or a toolbox would be. So a ute with 1000 kg of payload towing a trailer with 250 kg TBM only has 750 kg left for everything else, before you’ve loaded a single tool onto the tray.

Understanding GCM When Towing

Even if your payload and tow ball figures both check out individually, you still need to confirm the combined weight of ute plus trailer stays under GCM. A heavily loaded ute towing a heavily loaded trailer is the classic scenario where GCM gets exceeded even though neither vehicle looks obviously overloaded on its own.

How to Calculate Your Ute’s Real Payload Capacity 

Numbers make this easier to picture than theory. Say you’re driving a dual-cab ute with 1000 kg of rated payload, fully fuelled, with a steel tray fitted, carrying tools, two people, and towing a trailer.

That leaves just 100 kg for anything else you want to load. A pallet of pavers, a stack of timber, or a full toolbox of trade gear will blow straight through that in seconds. This is precisely the gap that catches out tradies who bought their ute expecting a full tonne of usable capacity and never accounted for tray weight, accessories, and tow ball mass eating into the number before the job even starts.

If that 250 kg steel tray were swapped for a 150 kg aluminium equivalent, you’d claw back 100 kg of legal payload immediately, without changing anything else about how you work.

How to Stay Within Your Ute’s Legal Payload Limits in WA

Adhering to legal load limits for utes in WA isn’t just about avoiding road transport fines; it keeps your insurance valid.

Start with your compliance plate, not the sales brochure. It’s located on the door jamb or firewall and lists your actual GVM, GCM, and axle limits for your specific vehicle, not the marketing figure quoted when it was new. Weigh your ute loaded for a typical work day at a public weighbridge at least once. It’s the only way to know your real number instead of guessing.

A few practical habits make a real difference:

  • Weigh accessories individually when you fit them (bullbar, canopy, toolboxes, roof rack), so you know your running total.
  • Load heavier items low and between the axles, not hanging off the back, to keep weight distribution safe as well as legal.
  • Recheck your numbers any time you add a trailer; tow ball weight counts as payload, not as a separate allowance.
  • If your work genuinely requires more capacity than your GVM allows, a GVM upgrade (engineered suspension and brake upgrades certified to raise your legal GVM) is worth investigating through a licensed engineering signatory, rather than simply ignoring the compliance plate.
